'Dredd' and 'The Grey' exec producer Adi Shankar heading up the project
Netflix just dropped some massive news for gaming fans: there's an animated Castlevania show coming to the streaming service.
Well known producer Adi Shankar quickly took to social media to confirm that yes, it was the project he had hinted at previously and to tease a few more details, like that it was "written by Warren f’ing Ellis."
Warren Ellis is an English writer with a cult following. His output is gargantuan but select highlights include work on Marvel, DC and Image comics, the graphic novel Red and the novels, Crooked Little Vein and Gun Machine. He's also written for video games like the 2008 space horror Dead Space.
Back in 2006 he mentioned a Castlevania project on his blog. "Apparently I can now tell people that I’m writing a Castlevania animated film for Project 51 Productions. So, um. Yeah" According to Ellis' Wikipedia, the series will be called Castlevania: Dracula's Curse and based on Konami game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
Also on the project is Frederator Studios and Kevin Kolde, producer on Adventure Time and Bee and Puppycat, to name just a couple. Frederator Studios is the home of Adventure Time and Nickelodeon hits like The Fairly OddParents.
"I’m producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde," said Shankar a year ago. "It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head."
Some concept art also surfaced on image sharing site Flickr, and it looks suitably gothic.
Season one of Castlevania will launch this year.
