At its Build Conference today Microsoft showed off its own take on the virtual reality controller. Due out around the holidays, the big news is that unlike the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive these controllers are tracked by the headset so don't require an extra camera or set of sensors.

The controllers will be available as a bundle with the Acer-made VR headset for $399. Developers can already order the headset (which rocks two 2.89 inch LCD displays with a resolution of 1440 x 1440, and a field of view of 95 degrees) but consumer release dates for it and the controllers haven't been announced.

In March Microsoft said 'our plan is to bring mixed reality content to the Xbox One family of devices, including Project Scorpio, in 2018." We still don't know what those plans entail, but a set of controllers that don't require a complicated room setup would certainly add to the Scorpio's pros list.
