Rapper is the latest art to experiment with mixing music and virtual reality experiences
The vinyl release of the Childish Gambino album Awaken My Love comes with a virtual reality headset and a specially created VR experience. The $60 set will be released on May 19.
To use the headset fans need to download the PHAROS VR companion app onto their phones to access exclusive VR live performances. The 'Me and Your Mama' video above was recorded at a Joshua Tree concert in September 2016, and a selection of songs from that show were rebuilt in VR so fans can get the front row experience without the travel, human interaction or ticket costs.
Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, isn't the first artist to experiment with VR. Bjork has created VR videos for a Björk Digital exhibition and The Gorillaz' recent 'Saturnz Barz (Spirit House)' was released with a 360 YouTube video that could be viewed in Google Cardboard and Daydream. Last month 'Under Neon Lights', a track by British electro-stars The Chemical Brothers and co-written by and featuring singer-songwriter St Vincent, got a VR makeover too.
