It's been a year since the crazed colors of Hyper Light Drifter first went on sale and to celebrate developer Heart Machine has teamed up with merchandising maestros Iam8bit to create a special anniversary edition.

The limited edition run of 9000 copies include a reversible gold foil cover, a fold-out world map and an old school style instruction manual for the game. It'll be $29.99 and is available to order today.

Hyper Light Drifter won praise when it was released for its design and combat and collected the Excellence in Visual Art and Audience awards at the 2016 Independent Games Festival awards. It even made it into our Top 50 Games of 2016. The developer, Alex Preston, has also spoken openly about some of the game's more unexpected inspirations.

“I’ve dealt with serious health issues since I was born: congenital heart disease, to start,” he told The Guardian. “The main character in Hyper Light Drifter suffers from a deadly illness, one he is desperately seeking a cure for. It haunts him, endlessly. That’s something I’m keenly familiar with.”

If you're more of a digital gamer, or just don't have the shelf space to spare the game is also celebrating its first birthday with a sale on Steam.
