If the MLG deal presaged the rise of esports in 2016, BAMTech's $300M purchase of exclusive broadcast rights to competitive League of Legends capped the year off with a bang. The deal, announced on December 16, was the first major purchase of esports broadcasting rights by a traditional media company (BAMTech is the streaming-technology unit of Major League Baseball), but it won't be the last. Companies like ESPN are buckling beneath billion-dollar sports broadcasting fees, and the search for cheaper content (especially content that appeals to young people, who are more likely to be cord-cutters) is only beginning.
