35. Everyone hates on the Kinect game

Hungry for a true first-person lightsaber gaming experience they had been denied since the Wii Remote made them realize how much they wanted it, hardcore gamers did not respond kindly to Kinect Star Wars. But let's divert from the hate. Maybe there was a whole other audience out there that…kind of loved it? "You wouldn't believe how many people have sent me letters or notes over the years about how they loved playing the game with their kids, or how much joy they saw on their face," says Craig Derrick, co-founder and CCO of mobile & VR publisher Fifth Journey, who led Kinect Star Wars' production team at LucasArts. Nowhere was this more apparent to Derrick than, of all places, his mother's funeral. "The 7-year old son of friends I hadn't seen in nearly 20 years came up to me, and all he wanted to ask about was Kinect Star Wars. And not just simple stuff about the game – he wanted to know about the characters, he wanted to know how the story continued, he wanted to know if the evil Sith twins survived. He knew more about the game than I did. His mom told me they loved that it was fun, not violent, made them laugh, and allowed them to play together… All of this at my mom's funeral."
