From 'Overwatch' and 'Stardew Valley' to 'Mario' and 'Pokémon', the best of a truly excellent year for games

Few years have seen so many cultural shifts in gaming. From Overwatch completely redefining the competitive shooter to Pokémon Go inspiring the world to get up off its ass and walk around outside, a lot of 2016's best games weren't just great experiences – they altered how we play. There were hugely significant releases across the spectrum – blockbuster shooters, arty indie titles, beautiful narrative journeys and elegantly designed mobile games. We saw old games revitalized with transformative new content, beloved classics refreshed as a potent reminder of their greatness and genres turned on their heads with new approaches. Significantly, a number of this year's greatest – Blizzard's Overwatch in particular, but many others too – will remain a constant in our gaming lives for years to come.
