16. Battlefield 1

In the opening of Battlefield 1 you're a soldier on the Western Front in 1918, firing panicked shots from cover. Your position is overrun, and you die. That soldier's memorialized with a name and date, then the camera moves and you're someone else further back from the frontline. It's the kind of idea players tossed around while playing "wouldn't it be neat if" and to see it realized in the formulaic Battlefield series is a genuinely thrilling surprise. World War I gave Battlefield 1 a sense of solemnity and purpose it's never had before. Admittedly in multiplayer we turned it into a game about horseback flamethrowers, but that's online shooters.
