Hi-Way

Atari created what was likely the first "cockpit" arcade cabinet in 1975 for Hi-Way, a third-person overhead racing game (black and white, as usual). This title stood out in the arcade because the player would sit down in a simulated car cockpit – a molded-fiberglass seat attached to a console with a steering wheel and gear-shift. Accordingly, gas and brake pedals sat on the cabinet floor. The graphics, while still primitive, presented an improvement over Gran Trak 10/20, but players still guided the action from an overhead point of view. Atari would release a popular first-person cockpit racing game, Night Driver, the following year.
