Grand Theft Auto

Speaking of old-fashioned camera angles, the original Grand Theft Auto had a top-down view that made it look antique even in 1997. But as soon as we started playing it, that perception changed. GTA was very much of its moment, a game that made perfect sense in the decade of Quentin Tarantino. Kidnapping snitches so gang bosses could torture them, performing a hit on a jealous husband, running over lines of Hare Krishnas – we could turn just as many civilians into flesh speedbumps in Carmageddon, but Grand Theft Auto added the real-world seediness of a gangster movie and that made all the difference.
