E.T.

E.T. did not kill the North American video game industry. They were already digging that hole even before they had E.T. to put in it. However, before the pendulum swings back too hard in the other direction: E.T. was still a very bad game. Its screens connect to each other as if faces on a cube, so going down a screen and then left a screen is the same as just going left to begin with, a baffling bit of geometric screwiness to mess with your head. And most of those screens are just full of holes you tumble down then slowly levitate back out of before falling straight into another one, foreshadowing this game's own destiny as landfill.
