A brand new game in the beloved BattleTech universe is coming in 2018. Watch seven minutes of early gameplay footage
If you're a MechWarrior fan that thought the chances of ever seeing another campaign-based game in the giant mech series was virtually zero – you're in for a very pleasant surprise. The first standalone single player MechWarrior title for PC in nearly 15 years was announced on stage at the Mech_Con 2016 event in Vancouver tonight by Piranha Games, the studio behind the free-to-play MechWarrior Online. You can see seven minutes of early gameplay footage – powered by Epic's impressive Unreal Engine 4 – in the trailer above.
"Our main goal with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is to provide fans with a standalone, story-driven single-player experience that allows for a great amount of flexibility in terms of player choice," said Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games. "Along with the release of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries in 2018 we're going to continue supporting our existing MechWarrior Online game and its fanbase with new updates and regular content releases. MWO is now in its fifth year of development and operation, and there’s still a lot of really cool stuff planned for it. For fans who have been waiting for the return of a true single-player MechWarrior game though, we are really happy to announce MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries."
The last major single player MechWarrior release – based on the BattleTech series conceived by FASA Corporation in 1984 – was MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, the 2002 standalone expansion of Microsoft's MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, which was released in November 2000. Piranha's free-to-play multiplayer-only MechWarrior Online was released September 2013.
