'Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey' is a third-person survival game from Patrice Désilets

Patrice Désilets is best known for being the creator of the Assassin's Creed series at Ubisoft, but his new independent project reaches even further back into history, to the very beginning of mankind. Here's our first look at third person, action survival game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.

The trailer went live as Désilets spoke about the project at the Reboot Develop event in Croatia. A significant part of the game, which doesn't have a release date yet, will take place in Africa between 10 million and 2 million years ago. The game was originally planned to be episodic, but that has since been dropped in favor of a larger open-world experience.

"I really let the players tell their own stories," he says. "It's not me taking the player the player by the hand and saying I want you to live this emotion in this order. Now it's more like have fun with the toy I'm giving you. You'll really create the story of your own ancestors and maybe you'll be different than what science said happened."

The game will be primarily about survival and resources, and Désilets notes the possibility of conflict, cannibalism and the dangers of the jungle. "We're all big apes, that's what we are, and we're kind of mutants because we live a fast paced technological places," says Désilets of his inspiration. "But this is not what we are. We are made out of the jungle that's why we're so fucking scared of everything."

Desilets also revealed something interesting about his hiring practices at his new studio, Panache Digital Games: "I've got two girls, I wish I had more and I'm trying," he says. "I had to say if the candidate has a dick he's not hired... I'm not telling the story of humankind only between guys. It didn't happen like that."
