CD Projekt RED denies conspiracy theories about a promotional ARG
This morning we got news about Cyberpunk 2077, the ridiculously anticipated next game from the studio that made The Witcher. Unfortunately it wasn't a reveal trailer or screenshots or the promise of an appearance at massive gaming show E3, it was a tweet revealing that someone is trying to blackmail the game's developers.
Some nefarious and currently nameless party is claiming to have early design documents for the game, and they're holding them to ransom. If they don't get paid, the documents will be posted online for the world to see and Reddit to analyze. Polish game studio CD Projekt Red is refusing to pay, noting that the documents are old and not representative of the current vision for the game. It is consequently urging fans to wait for official news about the game, and that "it would be best for you to avoid any information not coming directly from CD Projekt Red."
Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the same universe as the tabletop role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020 with themes of high-tech weaponry and cybernetic modification. That's about as much as we know so far. This being the internet, there are already conspiracy theories that this is part of some cunning ARG to promote Cyberpunk 2077, but CD Projekt Red tells Glixel that's not the case. "The tweet we published is real and it is all we have to say."
